Description
With our skip the line ticket we’ll cross the border of the Vatican City state (yes, it’s indeed a separate country!) and start the tour of the papal art collection in the Vatican museums: we’ll stroll trough the former living quarters of the popes enjoying the ancient roman and greek sculpture collection, the tapestries room and the stunning geographical maps gallery.
In the Vatican, all roads lead to the Sistine chapel: once the pope’s private chapel it’s now the place where the college of cardinals gathers to elect new popes, behind locked doors.
You’ll hear the story of the agony and ecstasies of Michelangelo that spent nine years in the chapel creating paintings that revolutionized the art world and made him immortal.
We’ll then continue to Saint Peter’s basilica, the biggest Catholic Church of the world, that contains art treasures like the stunning Pieta’, that Michelangelo carved out of a single block of marble when he was only 24 years old and Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s majestic bronze baldaquin, that covers the papal altar crowned by Michelangelo’s dome, still the tallest building of the city.
Walk down to the Vatican Grottoes, the crypt where most of popes are buried, and than come out, back to light, in Saint Peter’s square, where catholic people gather to attend papal ceremonies, and see the famous balcony he appears from.
